Far too many of you turn to "vets" and other so-called "experts" to help you with your dog problems. Yet everybody you turn to is either not really all that knowledgeable about dogs to begin with, and/or these people are looking more to pick your pocket than to help your dog. Remember, everyone you turn to charges you money for their help. From dogfood companies that sell unfit food products that will slowly poison your beloved animals, to the vets who offer these products on their shelves (knowing that the gradual breakdown your dogs suffer from being fed these inferior feeds will mean that your dog will be brought into them for "more help"), a serious dog owner soon realizes that the "friends" he goes to for help really aren't all that friendly. This chapter will give you a new set of "glasses" so that you will see the dog world differently. By glasses, I mean the lenses through which you see the dog world. SAMPLE INTRODUCTION


Before a person can even talk about dogs intelligently, he has to understand what a dog is. Although this may seem silly at first, the truth is most people don't stop to consider that all dogs are is nothing but domesticated predators. Most people today don't even know what a dog really is anymore. Most people think all doggies are really harmless little cartoon characters, or some kind of stuffed animals with ribbons in their hair, which is crazy. This chapter shines a bright light on the truth, which is the fact that ALL dogs are nothing but domesticated predators: hunters, killers, and eaters of meat. Man originally domesticated dogs for HIS USE, for specific functional purposes designed to help him survive. But today, man doesn't really need functional dogs so much anymore, and so man is now slowly diminishing almost every breed into being useless caricatures of the original performance breed types. Man is perverting the original performance breeds through abomination of "pet" and "show" breeding. Therefore, underlying intent of this chapter is to justify only the existence of all hunting and performance dogs, and to salute these animals as the only true representatives of the original breed types left to us. Moreover, to care for any animal properly, a person has to understand the nature of that animal, just to feed it correctly, let alone to understand its deeper needs—so remembering that all of your dogs are nothing but domesticated predators is vital. If you are just a pet owner this section will not apply to you. However, if you are aspiring to be a serious breeder of performance or hunting dogs, then selecting the right location and having a game plan in mind will be the very foundation of your success. Absolutely everything you do will be based upon this decision, where you intend to live and conduct this effort, and the truth is many places are not dog-friendly. Since there are many pitfalls that can happen to the unaware who tries to build his foundation on shaky ground, before you do anything (and especially before you start buying dogs and setting yourself up), you need to read this chapter. After your location is selected, the confinement of your valuable animals becomes the next consideration. Proper confinement of your dogs is absolutely essential to success, and yet most people don't know how to do this properly. From not confining them at all, to buying cheap kennels at the local hardware store (that any dog can jump over or dig under), there is simply no telling how many wonderful dogs have been lost to their owners' improper confinement protocols. And the sad thing is, the loss of every single dog that has ever escaped was absolutely avoidable. Good dogs need good housing and top-notch confinement measures, or they are going to be needlessly lost. Plain and simple. Yet the flipside to this is some people go the opposite direction and spend tens of thousands of dollars on tiny, cement "kenneling systems" that are miserable prisons for the dogs and unbelievably expensive for the owners. There are easier ways—and more effective ways! This chapter provides photos and blueprints for creating the best constructs in which the serious dogman will want to quarter his serious dogs. Even if you are just a pet owner, with one doggie, this material is critical to you keeping your pet safe and secure. Probably the single most important factor to the health and happiness of your dogs, both short-term and especially long-term, is feeding them correctly. Yet once again, very few people know how to do so. Most people buy dry kibbled dog feeds, which are nothing but slow poison to a dog. There are basically two obstacles to overcome in feeding your dogs correctly: (1) feeding the appropriate diet and (2) obtaining that diet inexpensively. Most people do neither correctly. They buy "dog kibble" that almost invariably isn't truly good nutrition, but on top of this they pay too much for such over-processed garbage. Do you think you would live a long, healthy life being fed over-processed dry kibble every day? Well, neither will your dog. This chapter will not only show you how to feed your performance dogs correctly, but it will show you where to get these top-notch feed sources for LESS than the cheapest of the store-bought kibbles. When it does become necessary, once again the information contained in this book is going to come to your aid, not just in helping you understand which drugs to use for what purpose, but where to get these drugs cheaply and without a prescription. Most all of your common kennel problems have been dealt with in the previous two chapters, but this one really zeros-in and focuses on antibiotics specifically, which ones are the best and most common for dog needs, how to use them, when to use them, and where to get them cheaply and without a prescription. No matter how careful you try to be in raising your dogs professionally, sooner or later you are going to face a medical emergency for which you either cannot afford a vet, or at a time when you're out in the field so far you simply won't have time to get to a vet. At this point, you will either lose your dog or you will step up to the plate as a competent and prepared professional and save your beloved animal. This critical chapter is like no other you have ever read before, and it outlines exactly what supplies you need to have onhand at all times, and how to use them, should you ever run into a life-and-death situation that falls in your hands. From which products you need to have in your emergency field kit, to IV Fluid therapy, to cortico-steroid use, even to assisting with a proper recovery diet when any seriously injured dog begins to pull through—this chapter alone is worth 10x the price of this book, because (I promise you) one day it will save one of your dogs. There are hundreds and hundreds of "dog books" out there, but once again very few of them matter to a serious dog person. This book here, by itself, covers just about every aspect of raising dogs that you will come across in your lifetime, and will become your central reference text for as long as you breed and raise dogs. However, there are other texts you may need for specific reference that simply are outside the scope of this book. From complete reference manuals of every drug made, to how to set fractures and breaks, to complete reference texts on performing canine surgery—as well as every canine disease known to man—serious specialty books can come in handy sometimes—yet such material is not readily available to the average consumer. This chapter weeds through all the wasted copy and narrows it down to only 6 extra specialty books that you may need, if you really want to know dogs on a professional and educated level. In prices ranging from $55 to $180, these books are the best in their field and will take your level of dog knowledge up to the degreed veterinarian level. (pp. 237-242)


SAMPLE CHAPTER 10


Despite how much you know, and how much you learn, there are simply going to be times when you and your dog will need a veterinarian. Whether it be for an xray, to get specific lab work done, or for an emergency c-section in the middle of the night, no serious dog breeder should be without an "ace in the hole" for a vet. Yet here again, you will find that most veterinarians are either unconcerned about your dogs and/or they are incompetent in their fields. Trust me, I could wallpaper my house with "vet reports" that ultimately came back wrong in their diagnoses. As someone who has seen a vet or two in 20 years of breeding and raising dogs, I will tell you the signs to look for in a bad vet (as well as a good vet), so that you can prepare yourself in advance by seeking out top veterinary counsel beforehand. I have driven as much as 3 hours away to make sure I had a good vet, as a truly good veterinarian (i.e., one who is legitimately competent, who truly cares about animals, and who is fair to your wallet) is a hard thing to find for a discriminating dog man. This chapter will teach you what to look for. It will also give you a breakdown of what are "reasonable" price ranges for various veterinary services, so you can see if your vet is robbing you or not. (pp. 243-248)


SAMPLE CHAPTER 11


Your basic foundation is set now up to this point, from where to set up your operation, to your kennels and housing, to your feeding protocols, to your kennel and disease management, including how to do all of these things cheaply and economically. But none of this really amounts to much if you are not feeding and breeding good dogs and if you do not have vision and direction as to where you're going with them. This chapter is a philosophy that applies to any breed of dog, regardless of its form or function, and will apply to any breed of dog that will ever exist. The 5 Keys to Success in breeding and raising performance dogs are (1) You Must Genuinely Love Your dogs; (2) You Must Obey Nature's Laws; (3) You Must Understand Your Dogs' Job; (4) You Must View Your Dogs As Valuable Resources; and (5) You Must Effectively Manage The Intangibles. It doesn't matter if you're breeding earth-digging varmint dogs, world class greyhounds, rabbit-chasing beagles, or top field gun dogs, these 5 foundational principles will apply. Every successful breeder who has ever lived has followed these principles (whether he realized it or not), while every unsuccessful amateur has violated one (or more) of these principles. There is no way around it. You either conform your efforts to these principles or you won't succeed—and the "natural" does so automatically. (pp. 249-260)


SAMPLE CHAPTER 12


This chapter centers around the actual mechanics of breeding dogs and successfully raising your pups off of your best dogs. Again, this might sound easy at first blush, but there are a ton of problems and details to get straight if you expect to do so successfully in any capacity. From your management of the stud dog and making sure he's fertile, to your management of the brood bitch to exactly target ovulation before you breed—to preparing yourself for the possibility of hand-raising the pups if needed—professional animal husbandry involves a whole lot more than just letting two doggies breed and going to check on the pups. This chapter sets you up with a good system, and it also gives you the best advise ever written on how to beat the dreaded parvovirus, first through prevention, but also through the best treatment ever devised should you happen to get it. This is an indispensable chapter! (pp. 261-286)


SAMPLE CHAPTER 13


This chapter is entirely different from the previous one; it transcends the physical mechanics of breeding dogs and it centers around the philosophy and gift of breeding dogs well. This final chapter clarifies the purpose of breeding dogs: which is to isolate and harness certain key genetic traits, while at the same time it shows that most people do things exactly backwards in their breeding efforts (scrambling everything up), which is why no one ever hears about them and why no one ever will. This philosophy is a gift from me to you. It was a gift that was passed-on to me by a Master Breeder, and it is a gift I now pass on to those who recognize gold when they see it: the purpose, secrets, and strategies of canine genetic management: which is establishing a bloodline. If the purpose of breeding "purebred dogs" is to define a breed standard amongst a world of mutts, then the purpose of establishing a bloodline is to define a standard within the breed through its best and most perfect specimens.
